We understand that your chimney must continue to be smoking (probably
incorrect English)

The biggest condition to buy such an upgrade would be that the new version
is compatible with the older ones (so, do not remove any events or methods
or change parameters on a method). We do not want to be obligated to change
and test all the older applications.

Yes, there is a future for Dynamicube as an activeX control.

**************************************

MarkStals

Total Posts: 3
Re: Is there a future for DynamiCube as an ActiveX control?
Posted: 09-11-2003 02:56 PM

Two rival OLAP tools for Delphi rely on TeeChart for graphing their Cubes.
This component is not only available as in VCL format, but also as a ActiveX
and .Net control as well. Check out www.steema.com for more information.

As I mentioned in an previous post, .net is not an option for me for the
next 3 years at least. My current employer (with 720 employees) sees IT more
as a necessary evil than anything else. My targeted end users work on
anything from a Pentium I with Windows95 to a Pentium IV with Windows 2000.
Requests for better machines are routinely answered with a extensive no.
Using a web interface is no soltion either, as the various offices are
connected with a low bandwith line.

And this attitude towards IT is common amongst the majority of companies I
worked for/with in the last 5 years.

**************************************

Josh Thomas

Total Posts: 12
Re: Is there a future for DynamiCube as an ActiveX control?
Posted: 09-11-2003 12:12 PM

How about an Activex control that works in .net. That way you can make VB
developers happy and .net developers somewhat happy. I still have a massive
VB app that I need to keep but I am also developing new modules for that app
that will be written in c#, so I need both.

I know that I, and other developers in my company, have said some tough
things in DD newsgroups concerning DCube but I feel that DCube was pushed
aside in favor of something that makes more money. Making money is what
everybody, including myself, is working towards, but sometimes making your
customers happy is more important.

I see that you mentioned the graph enhancement but what about fixing the
bugs first?

Josh Thomas

**************************************

Issam Elbaytam

Total Posts: 8
Re: Is there a future for DynamiCube as an ActiveX control?
Posted: 09-11-2003 11:24 AM

Thank you for your feedback and we appreciate your interest in DynamiCube.
While our focus currently is on the main revenue generating products for the
health of our business. DynamiCube is still an integral part of our overall
starategy to deliver a set of components for Data Analysis and Information
Delivery.

Mark mentioned the graph that is almost an essential requirement for
DynamiCube, that is something that we're seriously looking into. However,
it is a massive project on its own outside of all what needs to be done with
DynamiCube.

I do have one question in return to all of you. Our development focus is
shifting towards .net components, is this the same direction that you're
heading? or are you still in need for an activex version of dynamicube?

**************************************

Total Posts: 12
Re: Is there a future for DynamiCube as an ActiveX control?
Posted: 09-11-2003 10:46 AM

I have seen many posts like this and I wonder if DD will ever get the point.
I guess they don't have the money to hire a dedicated developer for DCube
but they sure have a pretty website now.

Josh Thomas

**************************************

Total Posts: 3
Re: Is there a future for DynamiCube as an ActiveX control?
Posted: 09-11-2003 09:52 AM

Well Josh, I just read all messages in your thread and none of the replies
from DD said anything different than what they been saying for the past 4
years. It all boils down to "we won't forget DynamiCube but for the moment
we're to busy with [any other control]". It is a shame.
Back in 1995 DynamiCube was their first control, and it was a gem back then.

I've shown my key users a trial version of a new project using both OLAP
controls on the same set of data. DC scored on screen usage and printing,
but the other control won them over thanks to built-in customizable graphs,
cleaner export to Excel and HTML, and more on the fly data comparison
options than is good for them.
No points for guessing which control I'm using now in this project. Its
documentation is a far cry from the excellent DC manual, but I'm very glad
it's a Delphi VCL control with full source code.

In it's current form and with the current competitors, DC's lack of built-in
graphs is a showstopper for my end users. Looks do matter after all...

Please DataDynamics, get some people to work exclusively to work on DC3.
Only that will generate sufficient cash from upgrades and new customers.

Let me know when it's done,

Best wishes.

**************************************

Josh Thomas

Total Posts: 12
Re: Is there a future for DynamiCube as an ActiveX control?
Posted: 09-11-2003 07:46 AM

See my posts in the "New build of DCube for .Net" thread for my thoughts

Josh Thomas

**************************************

MarkStals

Total Posts: 3
Is there a future for DynamiCube as an ActiveX control?
Posted: 09-11-2003 01:04 AM

Well, the subject says it all. It has been an extremely long time since
DynamiCube ActiveX had a major upgrade. IMHO some competitors have overtaken
this decent control in several areas, but DynamiCube has got a few areas in
which it is not matched yet (namely printing and screen usage).

For me DynamiCube for .Net is not an option, since my employer is not even
remotely planning to switch to .Net.

Any comments would be welcome.

ANN: Data Dynamics Newsgroups Moving

Originally Posted By: Eric Johnson - Data Dynamics<ActiveReports.Support@datadynamics.com>

Data Dynamics will be switching our newsgroup support to our new forum
support system in the upcoming weeks. If i delete the calculated field the time to generate the cube
takes less than one minute.
My feeling is that for each row retrieved from the SQL cursor, the cube
computes all the rows previsously inserted in the cube to resolve the
expression in the calulated field. Both the .Net and VB6 applications are using build
2.5.3.1029 of DCUBE.OCX. I use the VB6-based control for hosting in a IE
browser form.

Problem
---------
When used from VB6, I load the file and set enable user to arbitrarily set
field's 'RankOn' and property. I also allow them to dictate the
"NumberFormat" and "DisplayAs" properties.

Under this configuration, the changes in ranking do not refresh immediately
in the Cube whilst the changes to the "DisplayAs" and "NumberFormat"
properties do.

If the user causes the whole Cube to be freshed (say, by dragging a new
field to be grouped) then the rankings changes are now displayed. It seems
to me that the ranking changes are not causing internal refreshes. I have
also tried to get the Cube to refresh programmatically whenever ranking
changes ... without any luck.

Is this potentially an issue when this version of the Cube is hosted in a
ActiveX container / IE form ? This all worked fine previously with version
2.5.2.1010 (but for various reasons I cannot use this version any more ...
its a long story!).

DC examples

Originally Posted By: zoom<sumesh.nair@flytxt.com>

Hi

I have been trying to write a wrapper for DC to run under .NET and connect
to an Oracle database. I have tried running the examples provided on an
earlier post with subject "DynamiCube on a WinForm" but I haven't been able
to get it to work.
I am quite new to all this and was wondering whether there are other
examples out there. Can some point me in the right direction or share some
examples written in vb or .NET connecting to an Oracle db.

Thanks in advance
zoom
