Arial Unicode / Adobe 9 seems to be fixed
Hello,

I reported a problem in AR3 where Adobe Reader 9 freezes when using an embedded Arial Unicode MS font and a Western Chaarcter set only font. This seems to be corrected in AR6. Is this correct?

If so, when is the release of this product!!!! :-)

lorne,

I apologize for delay.

The issue is not resolved in ActiveReports 6.  As I had mentioned before to you that we tried to fix it in ActiveReports for .Net 3.0, but the fix was not adequate so we reverted the changes.  We did the same in ActiveReports 6.

We still feel that Adobe is responsible for causing it and I really appreciate all the help that you have provided to us in terms of workarounds and sample projects and pdf files to determine the root cause of the issue.  I will post our official stand here once again, if anybody else is looking at it.

----------------------------------
We have tested and researched a lot on this issue and finally found that this is something which is not related to Active Reports. Adobe Reader 9.0 is responsible for this issue of not being able to open the PDF generated by Active Reports if you are using special font like Arial Unicode MS.We have closed this case from our end. However we have two available workarounds for this issue.

1.Open Acrobate Reader 9.0.Go to File->Open menu and browse to the PDF file.Click on Open.
2.Open Acrobate Reader 9.0.Then drag and drop the PDF onto the Reader.

An alternative for a more permanent fix is to follow these steps:

Close all the instances of AcroRd32.exe running on your machine. Use Task Manager to make sure that no instances are running.

On a machine that has Adobe Reader 9.0 installed in the default location, copy CP949.TXT from the attached CP949.zip into c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\TypeSupport\Unicode\Mappings\win

If your machine has Adobe Reader 7.0 or Adobe Reader 8.0 installed, CP949.TXT can also be located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\TypeSpt\Unicode\Mappings\win directory on your machine.

Double clicking on any affected PDF should now render the PDF in Adobe reader 9.0.

We have found one mention of somewhat related issue on google groups for adobe.reader. http://groups.google.com/group/adobe.reader/browse_thread/thread/27ad5585d636175a?hl=en&pli=1

This is a workaround that we found through experimentation, but use it at your own risk.GrapeCity, inc. will not be held liable for any problems or damages which use of the workaround might cause.

----------------------
Another workaround that you provided to us is setting NeverEmbedFonts property on pdfExport instance to "Arial Unicode MS", which apparently resolves the issue (case 115680) with that specific font.  We will pursue this option and see if we can use the same for other fonts that are causing this issue.  We again thank you for providing such valuable information to us.

As far as release date is concerned,  I am expecting us to be in private beta for another week.  Next course of action would be to go in public beta with at least 2 weeks time frame, but the confidence and feedback from customers will drive that date.  Once we are confident and feel that we are ready, we will do a public release.

Thanks

raji

Interesting, when I upgraded a report to ActiveReports 6, the problem seemed to be gone...

Re: Arial Unicode / Adobe 9 seems to be fixed
I too have had this problem, but with a different font: MS Mincho. I think it has to do with the size of the font. ARIAL Unicode and MS Mincho are the two largest fonts on my machine. Most fonts are around 200-300kb. These two are 22mb and 8mb. I do think it is an Adobe problem. They work fine on FOX-IT reader. I have to find a font to replace MS Mincho now...

Hello,

Can you check if you have CP949.txt file available in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Resource\TypeSupport\Unicode\Mappings\win folder of your machine?

Regards,
Prantik

I am also having the same issue and am wondering if there is another workaround that would NOT require all clients to install the mapping file on their machines. The primary reason for using the Arial Unicode font in our reports is to allow for proper display of unicode characters. Are there other fonts that support unicode and display correctly in Adobe 9 without the need for the mapping file? Obviously any info would be much appreciated!

Hello,

What is the version of Adobe Reader that you are testing this with? Try upgrading to the latest version (9.2.0), open the exported PDF and check for results.

Prantik

I had been testing with version 9.1.0 which caused the error. After upgrading to 9.2.0, the reports seem to display as expected without errors or locking up. This has also been confirmed by the client that had reported the original error.

Re: Arial Unicode / Adobe 9 seems to be fixed
Hello there,
Any news from Adobe on this issue ? I cannot ask all my users to copy this CP949.txt (which works really fine by the way), neither can I ask them to upgrade to a specific version o f Acrobat Reader (they barely know what acrobat reader is, they just click on a pdf file and expect it to show up)
Besides 9.3 does not work very well, sometimes they open, sometimes not...
Adobe support says nothing about it, that's incredible !
Thanks in advance

Hello,

We have verified that this issue is resolved in Adobe Reader 9.2.0. The issue was with the Acrobat Reader so you need to contact Adobe in this regard. However the issue with 9.3 is concerned I request you to provide the RDF file of your reports so that I can test the issue.

Regards,
Ankit Nigam
